Public meeting re. Port of Cork’s proposed container terminal at Ringaskiddy

At last, there appears to be some hope on the horizon for traffic calming in Monkstown.
I first raised this issue in July 2004 with the Carrigaline Area Office. Since, the need for traffic calming on the R610 through Monkstown has received unanimous support from all Members of Passage West Town Council but, while acknowledged as being desirable, has not been in any way advanced by Cork County Council. A preliminary design and costing of a traffic calming scheme incorporating gate treatment at the Carlisle Place end of the village, a ramped and traffic-lighted pedestrian crossing from the Sandquay through the island to the bottom of the Glen and upgrading of the pedestrian crossing at The Bosun has been awaited for the past three years…
Chasseneuil du Poitou, Western France, and Passage West/Monkstown will celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the Twinning in November 2007. A delegation of 25 people headed by the Mayor M. Claude Eidelstein and President Gisele Méchain will visit Passage West and Monkstown from 1st – 4th November 2007 to mark this anniversary.

It is great to see that the surface of the R610 through Monkstown village has finally been renewed. As was promised by Cork County Council, this resurfacing followed the laying of the broadband fibre optic cable.
However, it is terribly disappointing that traffic calming measures did not accompany the resurfacing of the village. Traffic calming in Monkstown village has been promised by the Carrigaline Area Office of Cork County Council for the past three years…
Proposed biodiesel processing plant in Ringaskiddy
A partnership of Bioverda and South Coast Transport proposes to construct a biodiesel processing plant at the former ADM site in Ringaskiddy. It is anticipated that the planning application will be lodged in the next two weeks.
Bioverda, is the bioenergy subsidiary of NTR. It has two core divisions, one dealing with biofuels (biodiesel and bioethanol) and the other dealing with bioenergy (biomass, landfill gas and anaerobic digestion). Bioverda already operates two large biodiesel facilities in Germany…
On Thursday 19th July, Passage West Town Council invited ECAD (East Cork Area Development) to host a public meeting to impart information in relation to funding opportunities under the LEADER and the Local Development Social Inclusion Programmes. ECAD is the umbrella organisation for distribution of funds from both programmes in this area of County Cork. Over 20 representatives of community, development and sporting groups in Passage West and Monsktown attended at the Passage West Soccer Club to see how the available funding could potentially serve their needs…
